A gate valve is a valve that opens by lifting a barrier/gate in order to allow fluid flow. Gate valves require very little space, and when opened fully create no obstruction in the flow path. Gate valves are normally used to stop the flow, not restrict it. These valves are typically used in larger pipes because of the low complexity of construction compared to other large valves. When under high pressure, friction can become a problem because of the strong flow of fluids. Therefore, these valves are more common in applications where minor leaking of the valve will not become an issue.
